Mission Statement: The mission of the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) is to improve the lives of all people with learning difficulties and disabilities by empowering parents, enabling young adults, transforming schools, and creating policy and advocacy impact.
Overview: NCLD has three main functions: (1) providing resources to parents of children with learning disabilities; (2) providing professional development resources to educators of children with learning disabilities; and (3) advocating for the rights of individuals with learning disabilities.
NCLD offers a wide range of free online resources to educate and support families of individuals who have a learning disability. NCLD’s online communications program encompasses web portals including LD.org, RTINetwork.org, and GetReadytoRead.org, which are devoted to learning disabilities and early literacy. The organization also provides online newsletters and interactive programs, including LDTalks and webinars. Specific topics addressed to parents on NCLD’s website include:
- Warning signs and evaluation
- Emotional and social skills
- Bullying
- LD and the family
- Children’s rights
- Teens and transition
- Guide to IDEA
For educators, NCLD’s websites provide information about effective, research-based practices. NCLD’s Get Ready to Read! website provides an observation tool and related resources to assist educators and care providers in detecting the early warning signs of learning disabilities. NCLD’s RTI Action Network is a coordinated effort to reach educators including elementary school principals, school psychologists, general education teachers, and reading specialists. The RTI Action Network supports educators in implementing a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach to identifying struggling learners early and providing them with interventions they need to succeed academically.
